India's biotechnology industry is linked with its pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors. Biotechnology is a highly research oriented industry, and India has renewable raw materials and a vast pool of trained manpower required for biotechnology research. The Government of India (GOI) now emphasizes upgrading scientific research and allows duty free import of selected equipment for biotechnology research.

Presently, there are 500 biotechnology firms in India, with a total annual sales revenue of USD 1.0 billion.
